Davis Directory Sources
The Davis directory landscape is unusually broad because the city has a local government, county government, public schools, UC Davis, state agencies, business-license records, property records, and strong archive collections. Some directories list current public employees. Others list document parties, property assessees, license holders, business names, yearbook entries, cemetery lot records, or newspaper mentions.
| Directory | Who It Lists | Keeper | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| City of Davis staff directory | City employees | City of Davis | Free web; 312 entries observed |
| Yolo County staff directory | County employees and officials | Yolo County | Free web; 203 entries observed |
| UC Davis Directory | Faculty and staff, subject to visibility limits | UC Davis | Web; some listings may be limited |
| DJUSD school directory | District and school contacts | Davis Joint Unified School District | Free web |
| Recorder grantor and grantee index | Document parties | Yolo Clerk-Recorder | Online index 1850-present; images at kiosk |
| Assessor roll | Assessees and mailing addresses | Yolo Assessor | Office terminal or phone; not online by owner |
| Yolo Archives collections | Historical residents, students, property owners, officials | Yolo County Library/Archives | Appointment, database, and finding aids |
People directories work best when they are treated as scoped lists, not as one master resident database. A Davis public employee directory will not list private residents. A voter file is not a public browse tool. A yearbook or cemetery ledger may answer an older family-history question better than any current phone-style directory.
Davis Government Staff Directories
The City of Davis staff directory is a first-class people directory for public city employees. The research observed a search box, alpha navigation, department filters, and columns for Staff, Title, Departments, Phone, and Email. Department filters included City Manager's Office, Community Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Parks and Community Services, Police, Public Works divisions, Urban Forestry, and Urban Wildlife.
The Yolo Clerk-Recorder resource directory is shown below. It lists local public contacts, including the Davis City Clerk route, and works as a government-contact directory rather than a resident list.
The Yolo County staff directory adds county departments, including ACE, Agriculture, Board of Supervisors, Community Services, District Attorney, Financial Services, Health and Human Services, Library, and Sheriff-Coroner.
| City Staff Field | Type | Directory Note |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Text | Searches directory text |
| First-letter filter | Alpha browse | A-Z and All style browsing |
| Departments | Filter links | Filters by city department or division |
| Staff, Title, Departments, Phone, Email | Displayed columns | Visible fields in results |
Davis Directory Entry Fields
A directory entry should be read by field. The City of Davis staff directory sample in the research showed a staff name, department, title, phone, and email link. The Yolo County staff directory showed similar public employee fields. The Clerk-Recorder resource directory can show public contact names, addresses, and phone numbers for local offices.
| Name | Visible in the list and on some profile pages. |
|---|---|
| Title | Shows public role, such as director, specialist, clerk, or department staff. |
| Department | Identifies the city, county, school, or agency unit. |
| Phone | May be a direct line or department number. |
| Often shown as a mail link rather than plain text. | |
| Scope | Public staff only; not a resident directory. |
UC Davis School Directories
UC Davis is the largest distinctive directory factor in Davis. The UC Davis Directory covers current faculty and staff, though public descriptions say directory information may be limited to UC Davis-affiliated computers. That makes it useful but not complete. UCOP's directory gateway also describes first name, last name, department, title, and campus-directory links.
The UC Davis directory landing page is shown below. It belongs in a Davis people directories search when the person may have a campus role.
For schools, the DJUSD school directory lists district schools, addresses, phone numbers, and school URLs. The district address is 526 B Street, Davis, CA 95616, with office hours Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Davis Senior High School appears in the research as 315 W. 14th Street, Davis, CA 95616.
The Davis Joint Unified directory screenshot below shows the school-directory route rather than a full resident list.
Davis Property Name Directories
Public records can act like people directories when they index names. The Yolo Clerk-Recorder grantor and grantee index lists document parties, including owners, lenders, trustors, trustees, lien parties, and fictitious business name filers. It covers Official Records and Deed Books from 1850-present, but document images are viewed at the office kiosk.
The Yolo Assessor roll is another strong directory, but it is not a web owner-name search. The public roll includes assessee name and mailing address, parcel/location designation, assessed values, homeowner exemption, latest recorded document, local revenue district, and net taxable value. For Davis owner and mailing-address research, use the office or Tax Collector terminal, or the Assessor phone route for up to three parcels.
Offline owner directory. Yolo owner names are public roll data, but the county does not post owner-name search online.
California Business Directories
State and business directories help when a Davis name is tied to a company, license, contractor record, notary commission, or unclaimed-property clue. California Secretary of State bizfile Online is the business entity search and copy portal. The UCC search covers financing statements and lien records. Yolo Clerk-Recorder's Fictitious Business Name indices cover local DBA routes.
Professional directories include the California Department of Consumer Affairs License Search, the Contractors State License Board lookup, and the California active notary public listing. The State Controller unclaimed-property search can show names and last-known addresses for unclaimed property, and the Controller says there is no deadline or fee to claim.
| Directory | Keeper | Davis Use |
|---|---|---|
| bizfile Online | California Secretary of State | Business owners, agents, addresses, status, and filings |
| UCC Search | California Secretary of State | Debtor and secured-party filing trails |
| DCA License Search | California DCA | Professional license status and discipline where shown |
| CSLB Lookup | Contractors State License Board | Contractor and permit-related identity checks |
| Unclaimed Property | California State Controller | Name and last-known-address clue |
Davis Community Directories
Community and business directories are useful for context, but their scope is narrower than government records. The City of Davis business directory is created from current business license files, though static capture did not expose all fields. The Davis Chamber directory and Davis Downtown directory list member or downtown businesses rather than all residents or all firms.
Use these Davis directories to confirm a current storefront, trade name, business contact, or downtown association listing. For official filings, switch to Secretary of State records, Yolo FBN records, DCA licensing, CSLB contractor lookup, or city business-license records where available.
Historical Davis Directories
Historical Davis people directories sit in archives and finding aids rather than one current web list. Yolo County Archives holds records from the 1850s to present, including maps, blueprints, photos, bound volumes, manuscripts, newspapers, yearbooks, books, and articles. The Davis Archives brochure lists tax assessor rolls, lists, and maps from about the 1850s to 1970s, Teacher and Principal Reports from 1865 to 1949, UC Davis yearbooks from 1950 to 1970, and Davis High School yearbooks from 1962 to 2022 with gaps.
UC Davis Special Collections adds local and California history collections, the City of Davis Collection, Davis Land Records Collection, Davisville 1905 exhibit materials, local family papers, and Putah Township justice court records. The Online Archive of California finding aid for the Yolo County Clerk-Recorder Index to Deeds of Trust covers 1909-1927 and lists grantee, grantor, instrument date, and book/page fields.
| Historical Source | Years or Scope | People Directory Value |
|---|---|---|
| Tax assessor rolls, lists, maps | ca. 1850s-1970s | Owners, parcels, tax geography, and address history |
| Teacher and Principal Reports | 1865-1949 | Education-history names and school roles |
| UC Davis Yearbooks | 1950-1970 | Campus names and affiliations |
| Davis High School Yearbooks | 1962-2022 with gaps | Former classmates and school activity clues |
| Deeds of Trust Index | 1909-1927 | Grantor, grantee, date, book, and page references |
Davis Newspaper and Cemetery Lists
The Davis Enterprise is the main newspaper trail in the research. California Digital Newspaper Collection provides Davis Enterprise access from 1897 to 1924, while the research notes a Newspapers.com run to 1972. Newspapers can serve as directories by another name: obituaries, school mentions, society notes, business ads, legal notices, and local-government stories all place names in time.
The Davis Cemetery District and Arboretum was established in 1855. The OAC finding aid for City of Davis Cemetery Financial Records covers cemetery lot sale and financial records circa 1922-1962, 1980. Those records can connect family names, lot sales, trustees, and Davis history when vital-record access is limited or the search is historical.
Davis Directories Not Online
Some strong Davis directories do not exist as open public web searches. The voter file is controlled by application, ID, purpose, fee, and security rules. The Yolo Assessor roll includes owner names and mailing addresses, but owner-name search is not posted online. Exact Davis city-directory and reverse-directory holdings were not confirmed in accessible official text, so specific Polk or criss-cross year claims should not be invented.
This is where a Davis directory search must use the right fallback: Yolo Archives, UC Davis Special Collections, the Assessor or Tax Collector terminal, the Clerk-Recorder kiosk, Yolo Elections request rules, or a custodian request. The absence of a web directory does not mean the underlying record does not exist.
